Getting Married Overseas? You'll Need a Statement In Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad.

November 25, 2025
If you're getting married outside of Canada, you will likely need a 'Statement In Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad'. Vancouver Apostille Explains the Process.

If you're getting married abroad, you will likely need a 'Statement In Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad'. To find out if you will need this Certificate (or perhaps a BC Marriage Search Certificate, or an Affidavit of Single Status), you should contact your wedding planner, or the foreign country's embassy or consulate in Canada.

Vancouver Apostille regularly processes these Certificates on behalf of our clients. We also prepare and submit the required statutory declarations and certified copies for each file. Contact us to make sure everything goes smoothly on your big day.

Statutory Declaration Requirements

As part of the process, you must provide a statutory declaration stating your present marital status, the name and citizenship of your future spouse, and your permanent address in Canada. We will draft and swear your statutory declaration, which will then be used to get your 'Statement In Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad'.

Certified Copy Requirements

If you have been married before, you must bring us your divorce certificate or divorce judgment. If you are a widow or widower, you must bring us the death certificate of your deceased spouse. If you were born in Canada, you must bring us your birth certificate. If you were not born in Canada, please bring us your Canadian citizenship certificate and Record of Landing form. If you have lost your Record of Landing form, we will mention that in your statutory declaration of marital status. Once again, Vancouver Apostille will assist in the preparation of all declarations and certified copies.
